Dorothy Jean Reistroffer was born on August 15, 1928 in Preston, Iowa, to Edward and Gladys (McMahon) Reistroffer. She was a 1946 graduate of Preston High School. She married George F. "Shorty" Beck on June 29, 1947 at the Salem Lutheran Church in Spragueville where they were active in many leadership roles of the church for over 65 years. "Shorty" and Dorothy were recipients of the Heart of Gold Volunteerism Award given by Lutheran Brotherhood. They celebrated their 65th anniversary prior to "Shorty's" passing on September 13, 2012.
Dorothy and "Shorty" owned a farm north of Spragueville for over 50 years. Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother and partner in their farm operation.
Dorothy enjoyed square dancing, cooking, sewing and making quilts. Her faith was very important to her. She was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church in Spragueville where she served as the church bookkeeper until its recent closing. Additionally, she was a member of Lutheran Brotherhood, Spragueville Legion Auxiliary, and the Town and Country Twirlers. She and "Shorty" operated the food stand at the Preston Little League and men's softball games for many years, and were always avid supporters of the Preston Trojans. They had also served as Parade Marshalls at the Preston High School Homecoming several years ago.
