George F. Kampling, Sr. age 87 of Clinton, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2017 at the Alverno Health Care Facility. In following Georges wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 31st at the Pape Funeral Home. A Mass will be celebrated at a later date with burial to then take place at the Rock Island Arsenal. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
George was born in Hannibal, Missouri on July 16, 1930, the son of Francis and Mary Ivalee (Obermire) Kampling. George married Theresa Strabala on June 6, 1950 in Iowa City. They divorced in 1985. In 1989 he married Mary Jane Miller in Clinton, they divorced in 2012. He was a Clerk with the US Post Office in Iowa City during the 1960s where he also was a newspaper string writer for AP, UPI, Sports Illustrated and several newspapers. In 1970 he became the sports editor for the Clinton Herald. After retiring from the Herald in 1995 he became the Sports Information Director for Mt. St. Clare College.
George is survived by his two former wives; three daughters; Judith Kampling of Bettendorf, Mary Kampling of Iowa City, Nancy (Michael) Lafayette of Colorado Springs, CO; a son, George (Kendra) Kampling, Jr. of Minocqua, WI; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a brother, Joseph Kampling of Clinton and a sister, Grace Schroeder of Marengo, IL.
