William's Story

Text size

William R. "Bill" Smith, age 67, passed on November 20, 2017 at Mercy Hospital in Clinton, Iowa from pancreatic cancer. Bill was born on January 9, 1950 to Howard and Colleen Smith. He graduated from Lost Nation High School in 1968. Bill was employed by the Iowa DOT for three years and retired from the Clinton County Secondary Road Department in 2015 after almost 44 years.
Bill loved going to movies and in the summer attended all the plays on the Clinton Area Showboat Theater. He was an avid Yankee baseball fan and always said " if the Yankees aren't in the World Series it isn"t official". His favorite football team was the Indianapolis Colts. If Bill was a fan, he was a fan for life whether his team won or lost.
In earlier years, Bill bowled on the Latecomers bowling league and was a member of the Sons of Amvets. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and had served on the Building and Grounds Committee. He volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Bill met the love of his life on New Year's Eve 1979 and after a whirlwind courtship married Marsha (Oehrlein) Weinkauf on May 1, 1979.
Bill will be missed by his wife of 38 years, Marsha, his son Craig, grandson, Jared Reese, son-in-law Jeff Reese and siblings, Vicki (David) Maley, Marion, Iowa; Kenneth (Alissa) Smith, Maquoketa, Iowa; Denise Owens, Tiffin, Iowa; Dan (Lisa) Smith, Andrew Iowa and John Smith, Reddington Shores, FL and many cousins, nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father in-law, Gib & Virginia Oehrlein, his daughter, Kathryn Baumann-Reese and a brother Dennis in infancy.
In lieu of floral tributes, memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church and the Clinton Area Showboat Theater.

Thank you to Dr. Aggarwal and the chemo nurses at Medical Associates and the "angels" who cared for Bill at Mercy Medical Center and the Alverno.
