Alma's Story

Alma H. Nichols, 95, of Clinton, passed away, Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the Alverno.
A Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am, Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Burial will be in the St. Irenaeus Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Donald Goers, Matthew Cavanagh, Jack Cavanagh, Matthew Schwartz, Mitch Ries, and John Hannan. Visitation will be from 8:30 am to the mass time Saturday at the church. Alma Helen Nichols was born on November 11, 1921 in Clinton, the last surviving daughter of William C. and Sarah Sadie E. (McGrogan) Nichols, I. She was a 1939 graduate of Our Lady of Angels Academy, and was very active in its alumni association.
Alma worked at the Lyons Drug Store for 46 years. After her retirement she worked in the Prince of Peace Parish office.
Alma was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and earlier St. Irenaeus Catholic Church. She enjoyed bowling and was a seven time WIBC League Champion. She was a Clinton Regent and also a state Regent of the Daughters of Isabella, past president and service chairman of the Wa-Tan-Ye Club, active in the Clinton County Easter Seals, Mercy Hospital Auxillary, Women of the Moose Clinton Riverboat Days, and the Odeonette Auxillary. She was active in the celebrations of the Lyons community and Centennial celebrations of Clinton. She loved playing cards and having fun with her friends. She enjoyed traveling and was thrilled when she took a cruise. Most of all she loved her family.
Alma is survived by her late sister Mardelle Cavanaghs children; niece: Sarajane (Keith) Wise of Freeport, Illinois; three nephews: William Cavanagh of St. Paul, Minnesota; James (Lorie) Cavanagh of Clinton, Iowa; and Thomas (Mary) Cavanagh of Bettendorf, Iowa, 9 great-nieces and nephews, and 4 great-great nieces and nephews; and many special friends that made her last days happier.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings: Marie Nichols Goettsch, Edward Nichols, Margaret Nichols, John Nichols, S. Mardelle Nichols (C. Maurice) Cavanagh, Jane Nichols, and William C. Nichols, II, and her niece Sarajanes husband: Donald Goers.
