Bernice's Story

Bernice H. Helferich, 101, of Clinton, passed to her eternal home on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Bickford Assisted Living in Clinton.

Funeral Services will be 11:00am, Monday, June, 26, 2017 at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory, with interment in Springdale Cemetery. Bernice Hilda Hill was born on September 24, 1915 in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Rollie Jess and Alice Mable (Hagberg) Hill. She was raised in Clinton, graduating from Clinton High School in 1932. She attended Wartburg College for two years studying elementary education. She married Lenis Max Helferich on October 11, 1936.

Bernice worked many different jobs throughout her life. She worked at the toy factory in Clinton, then after moving to Colorado in 1947, she owned two Mode O Day stores; one in Greeley and later one in La Junta. She also worked at two other Mode O Day stores, Phelps Shoe Repair, and her last job was at the school cafeteria in Clinton High School after moving back to Clinton.

Bernice attended the Northside Church of God. She taught Sunday School, played the piano, and served on many of the boards. She enjoyed traveling and visited England, Germany, and Australia in her travels. She also enjoyed photography.

Bernice is survived by her son: Gary (Jean) Helferich of Odessa, Texas, grandchildren: David (Heather) Hill, Douglas (Maria) Hill, Darryl (Tammy) Hill, Debbie (Michael) Parker, Mark (Beverly) Helferich, Michael (Gene Brenak)Helferich, and Heidi Helferich; her brothers: Leonard Hill of Lincoln, Nebraska, Robert (Carol) Hill of Clinton; sister: Maxine Van Norman of Chesapeake, Virginia, and numerous great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband: Lenis Max Helferich of 40 ½ years, daughter: Jacqueline (Helferich) Hill, her parents: Rollie and Alice Hill, sisters: Leala (Kenny) Nolan, Irene (Bernard) Decker, Helen (Mike) Depouse sp, and Hazel Hill, sister-in-law Vera Gene Hill, and brother-in-law George Van Norman.
