Donald L. Powlistha, 83, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Monday morning, April 10, 2017, at the Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa, Iowa.
A celebration of Donald's life will be held at 10 A.M., Saturday, April 15, 2017, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Friday, April 14, 2017, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.
Donald Lee Powlistha was born on Janauary 29, 1934 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Louis and Ruth (Fisher) Powlistha. He was a Maquoketa High School graduate and then served his country in the U.S. Army earning an honorable discharge. He married Mary Jo Garrity in Maquoketa, Iowa, and to this union three children were born: Richard, Michael and Donna. He later married Linda Woods Battles on May 16, 1982 in Maquoketa, Iowa. She preceded him in death on October 19, 2014.
Donald had a long career working for the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) in the Road Maintenance Department. His career began while in high school, continued after the military, and totaled over 44 years, retiring on his 62nd birthday.
Donald was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. He had been active in many community organizations including serving as a coach and past president of the Maquoketa Youth Baseball program for many years. He also was a volunteer at the Ohnward Fine Arts Center in Maquoketa where he was instrumental in the building of it. Other organizations he was involved in were the Jackson County Tourism Council and Friends of the Maquoketa Caves.
Donald enjoyed playing cards, making fudge at Christmas time for his kids, woodworking, going to all the shows at Ohnward, and traveling. He was family oriented and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Those left to honor Donald's memory include his children, Richard (Jerrie) Powlistha of Clinton, IA, Michael (Becky) Powlistha of Clinton, IA, Donna (Jerry) Gilbert of Antioch, IL and Lisa Battles Hinz of Maquoketa, IA; 5 grandchildren, Kristy Powlistha, Thomas James Gilbert, Matt Gilbert, Jacob Powlistha and Wyatt Hinz; 1 great-grandchild, Jeremiah James Gilbert; 2 step-grandchildren, Travis Sumpter and Zach Sumpter; and a brother-in-law, Willard "Bill" Woods of Maquoketa, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister Doris, brothers Robert, Charles and Gerald, a son Larry Lynn Battles, and his wife Linda.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Ohnward Fine Arts Center in Maquoketa.
