James J. McGraw, 74, of Clinton, passed away, Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Iowa City.
Funeral Services will be 10:30am, Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church Clinton. Serving as pallbearers will Tom Kelly, Bob Holesinger, Chuck Swanson, Kenny Carlson, Mike May, Tom Naughton, Brandon White, and Mike Petersen. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00-8:00pm at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory. James Joseph McGraw was born on December 19, 1942 in LaSalle, Illinois, the son of Edward and Geraldine (Dart) McGraw. He was a 1961 graduate of LaSalle-Peru High School and later a graduate from LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College in 1963.
Jim moved to Clinton in 1965 and was employed at Clinton Corn as a start up and training technician working there until 1967. He was then employed at Chemplex as a supervisor until 1974 when he opened the Clinton franchise of Happy Joes. He has owned and operated Happy Joes for the past 43 years and was proud to have the longest franchise in company history.
Jim was very active in the city of Clinton serving as a current member and past-president of the Clinton County Community Development Association, past president of the Happy Joes National Franchise Board and past president of its association. He was a former member, board member and treasurer of the Clinton Rotary Club, currently served on the Clinton Community School Board since 2008, and a previous term from 1995-1999, former member and past-president of the Greater Clinton County Future Foundation, served on the Clinton River Boat Days committee for 13 years and commodore of the 1984 festival. He served on the Clinton City Council from 1984-1985, past member of the Riverfront Advisory Committee, past member of the Clinton County Mental Health Advisory Board, contributor of the Kings & Queens Athletic Booster Club, and a former member of Prince of Peace Church serving as chairman of various activities and past president of its school board.
Jim received many awards for his service to his community including: the Stan Reeves Gold Key Award in 1995, Clinton Rotary Volunteer Service Award, 44th Annual Clinton Jaycees Boss of the Year Award, 1987 Governors Award of Volunteer Service Award, Outstanding Friend of the College Award at Clinton Community College, and the Distinguished Service to the Local Community at Mt. St. Clare College.
Jim married Lynn (Anderson) McCutcheon on June 2, 1990. He is survived by his wife: Lynn of Clinton; three children from a previous marriage: Jimmy McGraw of Clinton, Melissa (Dirk) Thompson of Gilbert, Arizona, and Christine (Steve) Nogradi of Simonton, Texas; a step-son: John (Candi) McCutcheon of Clinton, Iowa; seven grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren; and his brother: Jerry McGraw of Flower Mound, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, and his step-son: Paul in 2014.
