Phyllis Neal was born June 19, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Herbert and Minnie
Neal. She loved music; played piano and violin and sang in choirs. She also played in the City
Youth Orchestra in Detroit. Phyllis received her BA degree in Religion from Kings College in
Delaware in 1950 and her BA in Education from the University of Dubuque in 1974. She
married Banks C. Doggett, Jr. November 3, 1950 in Brown Summit, North Carolina; he passed
away September 27, 2013.
In addition to being a wife and mother, Phyllis taught at Sykesville Elementary School in
Westminster, Maryland. After moving to Iowa and serving several Methodist churches with her
husband Banks, she worked in the registrar's office at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar

Catholic School in Peosta, Iowa from 1967 to 1969 and Holy Ghost in Dubuque, Iowa from 1969 to 1987 when she retired.
Phyllis was a member of the Methodist Church throughout Iowa since marrying Banks Doggett,
Jr. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, and a lifetime member of the Ankeny Chapter of PEO.
In addition to her love of music, she loved to read and instilled a love of reading in many
children; she participated in books clubs throughout her life. She was also a talented seamstress
and quilter, making sure her children and grandchildren have many examples of her work to
remember her.
Survivors include her children, Arica (David) Jansen of Clinton, Iowa; Gordon Neal Doggett of
Minneapolis, Minnesota and Cherryl (Rollin) Nothwehr of Winston Salem, North Carolina; four
grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brother, Herbert (Phyllis) Neal, Jr. of Detroit and nieces
