Richard was born in Thomson Illinois July 10, 1935 to Merle and Ihla (Jones) Atherton. He attended York Community High School. He married Beverly Forry on May 18, 1957. He served in the U. S. Air Force with his twin brother during the Korean Conflict in theatres including North Africa, Italy, Libya and France, as well as serving 12 years in the Air National Guard. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion and the VFW as well as a member and union steward for Teamsters local 371.

The "X-rated Moby Dick" spent most of his life driving "big rigs" across the country-he had two million miles on his butt. He could tell you every road you needed to take regardless of the state and the best restaurants to stop at along the way. He retired from long distance driving at the age of 78 but always had diesel in his blood and longed for the open road-taking short trips with his wife. He instilled a love of travel in his children. He had an infectious smile and was full of stories and jokes for anyone who listened. Richard loved watching his Cubbies, old westerns, flipping channels and spending time with his children, grandchildren and granddogs.

Richard will be dearly missed by his wife of 59 years, Beverly, daughters Kimberly (Ross) Drury, Kathy Raymond, Karyn (Rich) Mabeus, Kory (Teri) Atherton and special daughter, Tara Kent as well as grandchildren Christopher (Jenn) Drury, David (Rachel) Raymond, Monika Raymond, Alicia Mabeus, Angela Watkins, Wendy Struxness, Brent Mabeus and Scott (Nicole) Mabeus, great-grandchildren Brianna, Collin, Kaitlyn, Cheyenne, Samantha, Connor, Dylan, Paityn, Olivia, Cura, Abbey, Keaton, Camaryn and Aubrey, his beloved granddogs Chloe, Tucker and Bella, twin brother Robert (Margo) Atherton, brother Larry (Joan) Atherton, sister-in-law Barbara Kessler and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his only son Kevin, his parents, his in-laws Harry and Eleanor Forry, brother John and beloved canine companion, Coco.
