Charlotte, Iowa - David Allan Van Horn, 79, of Charlotte, Iowa, passed away, Friday, February 6, 2026 at his home.


Funeral Services will be 11:00am, Friday, February 13, 2026 at Immanuel Lutheran Church- Charlotte, Iowa. Burial will be in the Smith Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Clinton AMVETS. Serving as pallbearers will be Tad Bartels, Taylor Bartels, David M. Van Horn, Jr., Daylan Daniels, Kerry Kustes, and Larry Hastings. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Floyd Marx, Tim Bartels, and Bruce Rieck. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00pm at the Immanuel Lutheran Church - Charlotte. David Allan Van Horn was born on July 26, 1946 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Robert and Gertrude (Greaves) Van Horn. He was a 1965 graduate of Northeast High School. He then was drafted in the United States Army honorably serving in Vietnam from 1965-1967. During his tenure with the United States Army, David was a part of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. He was wounded in action and received a Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice to his country. He married Shelba Rieck on May 23, 1970 in Elvira.


David was employed in the carshop with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad; later working at the Savanna Army Depot as a security officer until retiring in 2003. David remained active with the North American Railway Foundation and met for lunch with other members monthly.


David was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, active with the Disabled Veterans, enjoyed coon hunting, loved his family, and the outdoors.


David is survived by his wife: Shelba; a daughter: Tina (Floyd) Marx of Bryant; three grandsons: David M. (Samantha) Van Horn, Jr., Taylor (Emily) Bartels, Tad Bartels; four great-grandchildren: Jameson Van Horn, Wrenley Bartels, Rhylen Bartels, and Mason Hartz; two sisters: Kathy (John) Kustes of Sabula, and Myrna (Ned) Stoltenberg of Clinton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son: David M. Van Horn, Sr., two sisters, and two step-brothers.


Memorials can be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Jackson County Hospice, or the Charlotte/Goose Lake Fire Department.
