MACON, Mo. — Eric George Chalgren, Jr., D.V.M., 84, of Macon, MO, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2016, at his home in Macon, under the care of Hospice Compassus. Eric was born on November 23, 1931, in Waterloo, IA, the son of Eric George, Sr. and Carrie (Scott) Chalgren. He graduated from Iowa State University, College of Veterinary Medicine at Ames, IA, in 1956. Eric was united in marriage to Carol Benson on December 27, 1953, in Clinton, IA. He practiced veterinary medicine in Preston, IA for 15 years, moved to Colorado and started a veterinary practice in Nederland, CO, then practiced in Stockton, IL for 2 years before moving to Macon in 1980. In Macon he bought and operated the Best Western Motel, and later built and operated the Long Branch Restaurant and the Conoco MiniMart before retiring in 2003. Eric was a member of the American Veterinary Association, Eastern Iowa Veterinary Association, Macon Flying Club, Elks Lodge, and Delta Chi Fraternity. He enjoyed flying, camping, fishing, skiing, traveling, boating, flying model airplanes and helicopters, playing cards, and especially spending time with his family and grandchildren. Eric is survived by his wife, Carol, five children, Vicki Swanson of Macon, Eric Chalgren III and his wife Peggy of Macon, Cathy Kelly and her husband Don of Windsor, CO, Carla Fields of Macon, and Kelly Gast and her friend Alan White of Macon, nineteen grandchildren, Chelsea, Donovan, Jorian, Marci, Bobbi Jo, Lacy, Jami, Lindsey, Christopher, Courtney, Nick, Laura, Rhiannon, Jared, Shanilee, Toni Marie, Josie, Cassie, C.J., several greatgrandchildren, one brother, Richard Scott Chalgren and his wife Karen of Aptos, CA, two sisters, Joan Rickoff and her husband Jack of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Elna Evans of Clinton, IA, and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Jeni Smith. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at the Hutton & McElwain Funeral Home with Rev. Julie King officiating. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Clinton, IA. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service at the funeral home on Wednesday. The family suggests memorials to the Randy Johnson Memorial Fund or the Macon Presbyterian Church. Death date: Jan. 22, 2016
