DeWitt, Iowa - Evelyn Anna Wieck, 95, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2026, after a short illness, at Fieldstone of DeWitt.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. Thursday, February 5, 2026, with a Service of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. John Dolde will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.
Evelyn was born on July 12, 1930, in Clinton, Iowa, to Hans and Flossie (Struve) Baasch. She attended county school in Hauntown to 8th grade and Miles High School through 11th grade. The schools enforced stricter district boundaries in 1947, resulting in Evelyn and her twin brother having to go to Sabula High School for their senior year. They graduated in 1948. Evelyn attended nursing school at Mount St. Clare in Clinton. On November 5, 1950, she married Elvis Wieck at St. John Luthern Church in Clinton, where she had been confirmed. They farmed in rural Calamus until 1977, when an eye injury forced Elvis into early retirement. They moved to DeWitt in 1988.
Evelyn enjoyed her flower garden, sewing, collecting dolls, traveling, and genealogy. She researched both her and her husband's family histories and wrote a book about her great-grandfather's immigration from Germany to Iowa in 1848 based on old family letters. Evelyn and Elvis enjoyed cruises to Mexico, Alaska, and the Panama Canal. They visited family in Germany six times. They were charter members of ASHHS (the American Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society) in Walcott, the German American Heritage Center in Davenport, and the Central Community Historical Society in DeWitt.
Evelyn was generous with her time and talents, always helping friends and neighbors. She volunteered for many years at the Central Community Historical Society Museum. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing numerous garments for herself and her daughters and making beautiful quilts and dolls. In 1972, when her younger daughter wanted to take an evening art class in DeWitt, Evelyn went along and discovered a love of painting. In 1981, her quilt and painting entries in the Clinton County Fair Creative Arts Division both won Best of Show awards.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter Kathlyn (Wilhelm) Hofmann of DeWitt, grandson Mark of Miami, Florida, niece Susan (James) Coon of Clinton, and special friends Bill Forret and Anna Livdans-Forret and their family, who have farmed Wieck Farms for 49 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Georgiana and Pauline Baasch, twin brother Edward and his wife Shirley, niece Debra Sebby, her husband Elvis, and her daughter Cheryl.
In 2015, Evelyn founded the Elvis and Evelyn Wieck Fine Arts Scholarship through the Lincolnway Community Foundation. Money is given each year to three high school seniors, one from DeWitt, one from Cal-Wheat, and one from Northeast. Creating this scholarship was a source of great pride for Evelyn, as it allowed her to support and inspire students pursuing the arts she and her husband so deeply cherished. Memorials in Evelyn's memory may be directed to the scholarship, the German American Heritage Center, or the Central Community Historical Society.
