Clinton, Iowa - John "Jack" Edward Nelson, of Clinton, Iowa, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on April 26, 2026.

A lifelong Clintonian, Jack was born to Irene Byers Nelson and Edward Nelson on October 8, 1933. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1951 and proudly served in the US Army from 1954 to 1962. Jack then worked for DuPont until his retirement in 1991, demonstrating his unwavering work ethic and loyalty.

On September 12, 1954, Jack married Joan Koch, with whom he shared 71 years of marriage. Jack and Joan had six children together: Steven (Debra) Nelson of Fort Meyers Beach, Florida; Kenneth (Kimmila) Nelson of LeClaire; Karen (the late Mike) Petersen of Clinton; Terrence (Patricia) Nelson of Machesney Park, Illinois; David (Sally) Nelson of Clinton; and Mark (Heather) Nelson of Clinton. He enjoyed the company of his 21 grandchildren and 36 (soon-to-be 37) great-grandchildren.

Known affectionately as a jack of all trades, he lived up to the nickname through avid gardening and fishing, as well as construction, even building a portion of his own home. He was a devoted fan of Chicago sports teams and loved attending sporting events for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Additionally, he took pride in investing in his grandchildren's educations. Jack loved music and was a devoted member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church.

Jack is survived by his wife, Joan; his six children; his 21 grandchildren; his 36 great-grandchildren; his sister Vicky (Doug) McCoy; his brother Richard (Diane) Nelson; and several nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents.

In his later years, Jack appreciated the constant support and care of his home healthcare workers. Especially dear to him was Jenny Hansen, whose dedication knew no bounds.

A visitation will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church on Saturday, May 2, from 9-11 a.m. to be followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. Pallbearers include Ryan Nelson, Bryan Petersen, Michael Nelson, Daniel Nelson, John Nelson, James Nelson, and Colin Nelson. Memorials can be made in Jack's name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
